Asked by swedie on Wed 19, Aug 2009 07:38pm :
I remember having a paperback about a little girl and her Swedish
grandfather. I would love to find it again! At least, find the title and
author. I think the title had "Grandfather" or "Grampa" in it. It was a
picture story (short) book.
Thanks for the memories!

I don't know if this is likely- it's a Whitman Tiny Tot Tale book so it's
very small and it's hardback but it is a cute little book about a girl and
her Swedish grandfather. "Grandpapa and Me" by Dorothy Haas is about a
little girl Jenny- "Yenny" to her Grandpapa. He pronounced all his j's as
y's- "Yumping Yiminy!" He brings her a "yack-in-the-box" as a special
gift.

Was this a novel or a picture book? Did it take place in Sweden?
This is a long shot, since the title doesn't match, but there is a trilogy about a little girl named Nancy and her Swedish grandparents:
The Golden Name Day (1955)
The Little Silver House (1959)
The Crystal Tree (1966)
The author is Jennie Lindquist.

Is 1968 too late?
I found "Grandfather Dear" by Celentha Finfer.
"An easy-to-read story in verse about the struggles of Grandfather and his granddaughter as they try to bake a cake to surprise Grandmother."
Nothing about them being Swedish, though. Did your book take place in Sweden or in America?

Sweetpug, I think You found it!!! I remember "Yenny" (Jenny) and "Yumpin' Yiminy!" and that they tried to bake a cake for the grandmother. Amazon.com had several used reasonably priced! THANKS!
However, would like to see the cover image before purchase. Amazon had no image available. Any help???

There's no cake baking in this book, though. It's about the little girl "Yenny" playfully hiding when her grandpapa comes to visit, he searches for her then says "Since I can't find my girl I will yust have to give the yolly little present I have here to the nice little girl next door." Of course, when she hears that she pops out of the closet and he gives her the gift- a jack in the box.

Could it have been an abridged version of Heidi?
Comment by swedie on Wed 26, Aug 2009 07:33am:
Thanks lkhatfield, but sweetpug, I believe got it. It was a 1966 Whitman TINY TOT TALE "Grandpapa and me" about a little girl and her Swedish Grandpapa calling out"Yumping Yenny" when she frightened him with her "Yack-in-the-box" (He pronounced his J's as Y's) Thank you for your imput though. I loved Heidi as a child, also!

Should have written earlier, but I just took the paper bag off my head! SO EMBARRASSED!! The second I posted my comment I realized SWEDEN, you idiot, not SWITZERLAND!! Oh, well...I'm happy someone was able to help you find your book. Isn't this site wonderful?
