Question: Illustrated 80s/90s book about articulated / walking clockwork buildings

Which I remembered more, I just remember a book about steampunk/clockwork
styled houses with stilt-like legs. I believe they were powered by some
sort of yellow balls? They were human-like with arms and legs, powered by
pulleys and engines etc. I had it when I was growing up, but I have no idea
how old it may have been.
